Left Amsterdam in glorious sunshine. First stage was a 380km run to Calais, a run that I have done many times in my life.
Stayed the weekend in Rochester with two unique, wonderful and really good friends Brian & Honor.
Left early Monday morning to drop the bike off at the depot of Moto Freight. A small family run business specializing in shipping motorcycles. They are based in Thorpe Surrey which necessitated me using the dreaded M25 ring around London and yes even at 6.30 in the morning it was chocka block. Left the bike in the capable hands of Tim who started preparing it for crating, sorted the financial bit out and had a tea and a chat with Roddy & Kathy, who are both bikers and owners of Moto Freight. Roddy gave me a lift to Heathrow where I took a plane to Reykjavik in Iceland where I met up with lifelong friend Susie. Then it was off to explore this little island for 6 days.
Iceland is a beautiful little Nordic island country in the north Atlantic ocean. It has a population of 332,500 and an area of 103,000 sq.km, making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. Two-thirds of the population live in and around the capital city of Reykjavik. The island is volcanically and geologically active (Wikipedia)
The first thing I noticed about Iceland was the nature….. it’s really spectacular but oh boy was it cold. We stayed in an air B&B in Reykjavik, from where we did guided day tours by bus. Taking in some of the main sights: the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano,
The magnificent waterfalls of Gulfoss, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, the age-old parliament site of Althing, where Iceland’s first assembly met, Thingvellir National Park and see the rift where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet,
the Strokkur geyser, bubbling pools and vents, the black-sand beaches of Reynisfjara, and the Sólheimajökull glacier.
We also just aimlessly wandered around Reykjavik taking the sights, sounds & smells. To get an idea just check out the photos.
