And now for something completely different. Bikes, Buses, Trains… let’s get lost in South East Asia

Tiggy Moon Dust fresh out of Africa…. Rotterdam harbour

I think that it is no secret that Africa stole my heart. I had an amazing time there. I feel that my journey there is not finished and I will return.

Tiggy Moon Dust getting a little help from our friends…. Dutch roadside assistance… she wanted to go back to Africa

But first a little trip around part of Southeast Asia.

Unfortunately in 2016 Thailand changed their temporary import rules for foreign vehicles. You now, officially, only get a temporary import permit (TIP) for 1 month and have to use the services of a guide. This makes it virtually impossible to use your own bike. Some travellers have said that they didn’t have to take the guide and some say they had to. A lot depends on the border guard. But for me to ship my own bike there for just 6 months or so is really not worth it. Also Vietnam can refuse entry to bikes over 250cc.

Tiggy Moondust took a hammering in Africa and needs a lot of work done to it. I do a lot of the work myself. I am a member of a motorcycle club in Amsterdam called the “BEAM” website mcbeam.nl It is a group of enthusiasts with a passion for British, European and American Motorcycles. They have a fully equipped workshop, bar and kitchen and they lovingly restore some beautiful classic bikes, build and ride some amazing café racers from a bygone era and chill out once a week in the club bar and organize different activities. They also have some really good parties, highly recommended.

Tiggy Moon Dust, my faithful travel bike is now safely tucked up in the club garage beside “the Guzzma” my Moto Guzzi Norge, my European travel bike. These two bikes are as different as chalk from cheese. The Guzzi is really fast and comfortable and is used solely in Europe, with the exception of a run through Morocco. Its typical Italian, dressed sharply and looks good. Tiggy Moon Dust, on the other hand, is built to explore on any road surface and is used outside of Europe. Tiggy the Triumph Tiger 800 XC is younger and smaller than the Moto Guzzi but has twice the amount of kilometres on her. But she also is a real good looker.

Tiggy Moon Dust and the Guzzma all tucked up nicely… safe and sound

Yes unfortunately I am doing this trip without my faithful companion.

So plan B. The plan now is to make a plan as I go along. I will be using public transport to get to the countries and the areas where I want to be. Then my plan is to buy/sell back, or rent motorcycles locally and to tour that region. What can possible go wrong…. We have totally got this…..

Ready to go…

Thailand, the land of smiles, Gods and Goddesses is the first destination.
